The Bar Council Public Affairs team actively engages with parliamentarians from all parties, as well as with the government and Opposition, to address a broad spectrum of issues impacting the Bar and the broader justice system. We do this through various parliamentary activities, including contributions to relevant legislation, providing written and oral evidence to committees, and organising meetings and events.

We are currently working on the following Bills:

  • Property (Digital Assets etc) Bill
  • Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill
  • Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill
  • Data (Use and Access) Act
Justice policy reviews
Spending review
Access to justice
  • Our access to justice dashboard – a live and interactive map which gives you a constituency, local and regional picture of access to justice. The dashboard provides information on active and closed courts, legal aid providers, and legal aid barristers

Manifesto for justice 2024

Soon after the General Election was called, we finalised our ‘Manifesto for justice 2024’. The manifesto draws on Bar Council research and policy ideas developed through our committees. It sets out an 8-point plan under three themes: a strong, effective and properly funded justice system, access to justice, and upholding the rule of law.
